The project of New Assiut Barrage is considered the great water passage on the River Nile after the High Dam. It is one of the projects carried out by the Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources - Reservoirs and Grand Barrages Sector (RGBS) to organize the water management in the agriculture and irrigation field and serve 5 Upper Egypt governorates. The project was established in partnership between the Egyptian and the German governments as an alternative to the old Assiut barrages. It is assumed to benefit from it in agriculture, irrigation to conserve water, and electricity generation through the power plant, as well as river navigation, and tourism promotion through the maritime locks, and road and transport work. Its construction continued for several years until it was inaugurated by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. New Assiut Barrage Project consists of an embankment dam, a gated spillway, a river hydropower plant and a navigation lock in the river Nile. The square's development project aims at highlighting the unique treasures of the ancient Egyptian civilization, emphasizing the importance of making the square look its best, and beautifying it, to become a new attraction among the numerous archaeological and tourist attractions in Cairo. The development work took 10 months at an estimated cost of about EGP 150 million  The development project included a number of axes; the first included the removal of all billboards at the top of the buildings' facades, standardizing and unifying the color of the shops, in addition to updating the lighting system to fully show the square's landmarks, especially after installing the Pharaonic obelisk and rams. The second axis guarantees the development of the main square as it is the most important part of the development project.
